Fundamental Issues in Modeling Language

Thomas Landauer, Pearson Knowledge Technologies

Current models do a good job of learning to estimate the similarity of word and passage meanings from exposure to the same inputs from which humans do, and can thereby simulate comprehension quite well. No models can yet learn from natural input (with no help from human descriptive rules or annotations) how to use syntax to improve comprehension or to compose text that syntactically and semantically expresses new "ideas" similarly well.
