John Cabiles
Research Assistant

John is a 3rd year Cognitive Science major from the Bay Area. He is interested in child development studies, from which he can draw conclusions about human cognition as a whole, particularly those that deal with language and object concepts. He hopes that by studying the norm of human behavior, he will be better prepared to understand abnormal behavior, setting him up for his plans to go into clinical psychology. In his free time, John likes to watch and write movies.

Emily Carrigan


Lab Manager

Emily received her B.A. from Wellesley College in Cognitive and Linguistic Sciences. She has assisted in developmental language research at Wellesley College, USC’s Language Development Lab, and Harvard University's Lab for Developmental Studies. She plans to pursue a Ph.D. in Cognitive Science, studying what Nicaraguan Sign Language can tell us about the process of language evolution. She enjoys knitting and will be spending the next year teaching English in Japan!

Kristen Cochrane
Research Assistant


Kristen is a 3rd year Cognitive Science major who is also getting her minor in Classical Civilizations. She is interested in the development of children and how they learn in an interactive environment. In the future she hopes to attend graduate school and pursue a career in educational administration and counseling. In her spare time she works at the Anteater Recreation Center, runs and spends time with her friends.

Loan Le
Research Assistant


Loan is a 3rd year Psychology major who wants to learn more about
language, particularly how language disorders such as anomia and aphasia occur. By joining the Cognitive Development Lab, she looks forward to learning more about how children develop the concept of number words. After graduating from UCI, she plans to go to graduate school to research more on language disorders. In her spare time, she likes to sketch pictures and read fashion magazines.

Vanessa Lewis
Research Assistant


Vanessa is a fourth year cognitive sciences major and conflict resolution minor.  She is particularly interested in the cognitive development of children as well as the development of social-emotional health.  Vanessa seeks to obtain her Ph.D. in School Psychology after completing her training at UCI.

James Negen

Research Assistant


James is a third year Cognitive Sciences major. He's interested in being a researcher/professor in cognitive fields, and hopes to gain valuable research experience in the lab. He plans to one day to move onto grad school and get a PhD. in Cognitive Psychology. In his spare time he really enjoys videogames and is volunteering with his church.

Emily Slusser

Graduate Student Researcher


Emily Slusser is a second year graduate student in the Department of Cognitive Sciences at the University of California, Irvine.  She is currently studying children’s understanding of number words and numerosity, specifically continuous and discrete quantities and when children connect number words to discrete quantification.  In the past she has studied the effect of intervention programs on language development of underprivileged preschool children and has researched gender differences in social and antisocial behavior of preschool children.

Christina Tajalli


Research Assistant


Christina Tajalli is a second year Psychology major interested in the cognitive development of children. She hopes to combine practical experience with children and working in the lab into a cohesive understanding of child behavior and development. Christina hopes to attain her doctorate in child development, as well as becoming involved in public policy to make resources more available to children and parents looking for assistance. Besides academics, her interests include film, photography, and fashion design.

Rochelle Telebrico

Research Assistant

Rochelle is a third year psychology major. By working in this lab, she hopes to obtain valuable research experience and insights on children's number word learning. Her plans for the future include attending graduate school to receive a doctorate degree in psychology in able to work with children in research and, perhaps, in a private setting. Aside from academics, her interests include movies of the 80s, baking, and boardgames.

Farah Toullier

Research Assistant

Farah is a third year Cognitive Science and pending Sociology double major. She is interested in exploring and acquiring a better understanding of the cognitive development of children. She is especially interested in learning and language. She hopes to pursue a doctoral degree after finishing her bachelor’s degree from UCI. Aside from academics, her interests include comedy movies, salsa dancing and animals.
